Everybody pretends to hate AI slop, but the biggest issue is that AI slop itself is subjective: something only becomes AI slop when someone recognizes it as such. Until then, it lives freely among us.
Slop has always been part of the digital world, even before artificial intelligence, but AI made the creation and distribution of slop so accessible and cheap that you now need to look through a slop detection lens whenever you open your phone or laptop, and it's exhausting.
What is AI slop?
- AI slop is bad prompting.
- AI slop is something that either has no reason to exist or is so bad that it shouldn't exist in its current form.
- AI slop has no clear intention.
- AI slop is overconfident.
- AI slop is "Fake it until you make it," but you never make it.
What is NOT AI slop?
- AI slop is not all AI-generated media.
- AI slop is not code written 100% by AI.
- AI slop is not a PowerPoint made by Claude. (Most likely it is if no human reviews it.)
- AI slop is not a vibe-coded personal project.
